Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet Live Stream Election Report
The presidential election is behind us, and Joe Biden is now president-elect of the United States. Throughout the course of the campaign, live streaming platforms played a significant role in reaching young people. This report from Streamlabs with data from Stream Hatchet suggests that more and more viewers are turning to platforms like Twitch and YouTube to stay informed.
“Gaming and Live Streaming are transforming the ways in which we consume media. Five years ago, no one would believe that Travis Scott’s biggest concert of the 2020 calendar year would be within a Fortnite game, or that a Virtual K-Pop group, KDA, would attract millions of fans across the globe. With one of the world’s most influential election cycles, It’s no surprise that gaming influencers are playing important role in how younger audiences are consuming news,” said Eduard Montserrat, CEO of Stream Hatchet, “Our latest report with Streamlabs found that HasanAbi, generated 2.5 million hours watched during Tuesday’s election night, making him the 6th most-watched election-themed channel across Twitch and YouTube.”
The live streaming industry has grown significantly in 2020. The Q3 2020 live streaming industry report from Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet found that audiences watched over 7.46 billion hours of content across all live streaming platforms last quarter, nearly double the 3.89 billion watched for the same time period last year. Historically, the majority of live-streamed content comes from video games. However, Twitch’s non-gaming category, “Just Chatting” was the second most-watched category across all live streaming platforms in Q3 with 522 million hours. Twitch is quickly evolving beyond gaming, and this political season helped accelerate it.
“Over the last few weeks and months, many Twitch streamers shifted their content from video games to presidential debate and election coverage,” said Ashray Urs, Head of Product at Streamlabs. In just an hour and a half, viewers on Twitch watched over 305,000 hours of presidential debate coverage. This increased interest in politics was only heightened when U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made her Twitch debut, which quickly became one of the most-watched live streams on the platform, peaking at 435,000 viewers.”
As the numbers below suggest, it is clear live streaming will continue to play a growing role in future elections as politicians seek to reach young voters, and live streamers take a keener interest in politics.
