Creating an eye-catching YouTube thumbnail is important for attracting viewers (new and old) to your videos. Whether you're uploading static content or live streaming on YouTube using live stream software such as Streamlabs, a compelling thumbnail can make all the difference. Many accessible tools exist for designing stunning thumbnails, and one such tool is Canva, a user-friendly, browser-based graphic design platform.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a YouTube thumbnail using Canva. However, you can generally follow the same steps using any designing software that you have access to, as the same principles apply:
Step 1: First, go to Canva.com and sign up for a free account or log in if you already have one.
Step 2: Once you're logged in, click on the Create a Design button at the top right corner of the homepage.
In the search bar, type "YouTube Thumbnail" and select one of the options with a preset size of 1280 x 720 pixels, which is the optimal size for YouTube thumbnails. In this case, we’re choosing the Fortnite YouTube thumbnail.
Step 3: One of Canva’s claims to fame is that it offers a wide range of templates, including for YouTube thumbnails. Once you’ve opened a new design file, browse through the available options and choose one that fits your video's theme or vibe. In this case, since we chose the Fortnite YouTube Thumbnail, Canva showed us a ton of gaming-related templates.
You can also start from scratch by building on top of the blank template.
Step 4: If you choose not to build your thumbnail from a template, you can upload images.
You can also choose from Canva's extensive library of photos and elements or a solid background from the main editor (when the background is selected). Whatever you do, ensure the background is relevant to your video's content and visually appealing.
Step 5: Drag and drop the elements onto your thumbnail and arrange them as desired. Here are some general tips for creating a good thumbnail:
- Use Multiple Images: Don't be afraid to incorporate multiple images or visual elements that give viewers an idea of what to expect without fully giving everything away. This can create intrigue and entice viewers to click on your video.
- Leverage Tools Like Background Remover: Utilize tools such as background removers to seamlessly blend images without making the thumbnail look overwhelming. This helps highlight the key elements without unnecessary clutter.
- Maintain a Clear Focal Point: Make sure your thumbnail has a clear focal point that immediately draws the viewer’s attention. This could be a striking image or bold text.
- Keep It Simple: Avoid overcrowding your thumbnail with too many elements. A clean and simple design is often more effective in capturing attention.
- Be Consistent with Branding: Use colors, fonts, and styles consistent with your channel's branding to create a cohesive look across all your thumbnails. Pro-Tip: Canva allows you to save your branding colors and text to quickly reference them when designing.

Step 6: Including text is a great way to add finishing touches and some context to your YouTube Thumbnail. Click on the Text tab in the left navigation menu to add headings, subheadings, and body text to your thumbnail. Choose bold, readable fonts and contrasting colors to make your text stand out.
Also, keep your text concise and to the point, using keywords that will grab potential viewers' attention.
Step 7: Make your thumbnail pop by applying filters and effects to your images and background. Click on an element and select the Edit Option option to add effects, adjust (brightness, contrast, saturation), crop, and more. Canva also offers various effects, such as shadows and glows, to give your thumbnail a professional look.
Step 8: Take a step back and review your thumbnail. Once you're satisfied with your design, click the Share button, then Download at the top right corner of the screen.
If you feel compelled, share your thumbnail design with a friend, fellow creator, or someone you trust for feedback.
Step 9: Finally, upload your new thumbnail to your YouTube video during the video upload process or through the YouTube Studio.
Remember, a great thumbnail is the first step to drawing in your audience, so take your time and make it count. Happy designing!
